In 1984, Michael Brown had a vision for a new kind of street map. He had been working abroad for several years traveling through unfamiliar cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

During his travels he would cut out the main area of each city from a larger map and fold it in his pocket in order to have a handy street guide. His modified street map served a few purposes. It was easy to carry around and store in his backpack. Also, it helped him remain discreet as a tourist in a new place. A small guide to the city streets did not have to be opened in every direction and laid out in an oversized display.

When Brown came home from his travels, he created the first prototype of the street map he envisioned as a better tool for future travelers. His design focused on the center sections of major cities, and featured an innovative accordion fold design. The street map would be full of color and clean modern graphics, and would be finished with a layer of lamination for increased durability.
