The Rome street map from Streetwise provides the best overall views of Rome’s center city as seen from the following famous Roman hills:

The Belvedere on the Janiculum (Gianicolo) map reference L5. Easily reached from the neighborhood of Trastevere where you should spend some time walking around this charming neighborhood during the day. After dark, Trastevere turns rather youthful and raucous. Anyway walking west to the via Garibaldi you will find steps - white dashed lines on blue casing depicted on the Streetwise map - leading up to S. Pietro in Montorio and the beautiful fountain of Acua Paola. A short walk along the Passeggiata Gianicolo takes you up to the Monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi from where stunning eastern views of Rome can be savoured.

The Aventine Hill is approached from the Piazalle Uga la Malfa on the via del Circo Massimo, cross from the famous Circus Massimo, on through the rose garden (Rosetta di Roma) and up to Via S Sabina and walk toward the end of the street to find the Priorato di Malta which contains the famous keyhole through which you can see Saint Peters Basilica. Fantastic!

The Pincio (C9) offers another wonderful overview looking west over the city of Rome. Ideally, you first book tickets for an early morning visit to the Borghese Gallery. The Gallery is located in the Villa Borghese gardens about half hour walk west from the Pincio viewpoint. Visit the Borghese Gallery first than stroll through the Borgheses Gardens to the Pincio for the views. Then walk down the steps to the Piazza del Popolo and follow the via del Corso to Ara Pacis street and walk over to see the Alter of Peace in the Richard Meier designed building. Come back out to the via corso than walk down via Condotti heading toward the Spanish steps at the Piazza di Spagna in time for lunch. This is prime high fashion shopping territory and excellent people watching ville.

The Roman Forum and Palatine hill at Rome street map ref. M11 was the political, commercial, and religious heart of Rome. This site where few columns now stand among ruined walls and crumbling foundations bore witness to 12 centurimapes of history which established Roman civilization. The Palatine is also rich in archaeological sites which served as a residential area during the republic.

Access to the Forum is off the via di Fori Imperiali map ref L11. After the Palatine you’ll exit near the Coliseum and Arch of Constantine.

The Capitoline Hill E-F24 symbolized the power of ancient Rome. There now stands the city’s administrative offices and the Church of Santa Maria d’Aracoeli. Depicted in architectural detail on the Rome street map inset.

North of the Coliseum up the via Fori Imperiali you’ll walk into  the older district of Rome. On the Streetwise map of Rome front there is an inset map of Historic Rome. This is an enlarged area map drawn to a scale of 1:8700 and is the most detailed, complete and readable map of the Historic center of Rome you can find.

Here you will visit famous sites like Pantheon, the Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia, Campo dei Fiori, Trevi Fountain, the Capitoline museums at the Piazza di Compidoglio the great synagogue now the Jewish museum and a wealth of old palaces and churches.

No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to the Vatican City, Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum including the Sistine Chapel. So much has been written about the Vatican Museum and Saint Peters Square that the only thing to add is that the Vatican complex is nicely drawn in architectural detail on the Streetwise Rome city map and to visit both the museum and the Basilica late in the day when most of the big groups are gone is worth considering.
