New Orleans Street Map

New Orleans is one of the hottest tourist destinations in the United States and for a good reason. New Orleans offers a visitor an authentic experience of a unique American city with a special history. New Orleans is a n early American colony where Africans, and American Indians shared their cultures and intermingled with European settlers. Encouraged by the French government this cultural gumbo produced a distinct cultural center still in evidence today.

A good up to date New Orleans street map will help the visitor get oriented to New Orleans its neighborhoods and sights.  In New Orleans one does not use compass directions to give directions. The directional key printed boldly on the STREETWISE® New Orleans street map shows that places are located and referenced as Lakeside, Riverside, Downtown or Uptown. You still need a compass though to orient your own way of thinking about New Orleans.

The French Quarter also known as the Vieux Carré sits along the crescent shaped Mississippi River. For some this is where the action is. Bars, restaurants, the majority of hotels are located in the French Quarter.  Normally, STREETWISE® maps feature all important sites and hotels, but with our New Orleans street map we included restaurants and clubs. New Orleans is one of the few cities without a closing law so literally the good times role 24/7.  In addition, food in New Orleans is way of life and plays a staring role in the cultural life of the city.  Many restaurants in New Orleans have become famous institutions like Galatoires, Emeril’s, K Paul’s to name a few. Seafood, especially oysters, has always been part of New Orleans food culture. The Gulf oil spill has not spoiled the pleasure  of eating oysters.  New Orleans fishing areas are not located in the oil spill area.

While in the French Quarter you can experience one of the best views of New Orleans via the Canal street Ferry ride across the Mississippi River and learn why New Orleans is called the Crescent City. You can board the Ferry at the foot of Canal Street right next to The Aquarium of the Americas. The ferry drops you off at Algiers Point. The neighborhood of Algiers escaped the ravages of Hurricane Katrina entirely, and has preserved much of its 19th century village charm.

Dubbed The Garden District  for its showy gardens, this New Orleans neighborhood is “uptown” of the French Quarter. Created in the early 19th century by Barthelemy Lafon as an open, semi-urban community of  interrelated parks  with fountains and canals. Its where the city’s original aristocratic class settled. It has one of the earliest expressions of Greek Revival architecture to appear in New Orleans and the streets still bear the names of 9 muses of Greek mythology. Many of the mid 19th century Greek Revival and Italianate homes built in this classical setting remain. The STREETWISE® New Orleans street map outlines the Garden District and pinpoints many of these old homes with green symbols.

Tremé is just northwest of the French Quarter above North Rampart. The  Louis Armstrong Park centers the neighborhood. Tremé is America’s oldest African American neighborhood. The area received its namesake from a model hat maker and developer who migrated from France and settled in New Orleans in 1783 and was able to own a small portion of the area for a short time. A unique aspect to Tremé is the purchase  and ownership of real property by African Americans during the time of slavery was only available in New Orleans. After Katrina  many people came together to rebuild the district and life has returned to near normal. Tremé is home to several new museums, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Backstreet Cultural Museum.

Faubourg is a French term that literally means suburb or neighborhood. The Faubourg Marigny is “Downriver” or east of the French Quarter and was the second suburb built in New Orleans. Marigny is an artist friendly cosmopolitan neighborhood. Many of the old Creole and Greek Revival homes, and warehouses were bought and restored and now accommodate artist studios and performance spaces.

The Central Business District is easy to identify on the STREETWISE® New Orleans street map because many of its large building are drawn in architectural detail the in the center of the map. Anchoring the north end of the CBD is The Louisiana Superdome which can’t be missed on the map.

The city’s Arts District and Warehouse District has also been revitalized. This historic neighborhood was once the industrial area of the 19th century where grain, coffee, and other commodities were stored. Now it’s the “SOHO” of the south. Harrah’s Casino is located here as well as the Convention Center. Six new museums have opened in the past few years as well as new restaurants and hotels.

You will note that on the STREETWISE® New Orleans street map the Charles Avenue Street trolley line runs from Carrolton an the University District straight through the Garden District, The Arts District, the CBD to the border of the French Quarter so one could take in many of the sights riding this historic form of mass transit.

The New Orleans map area inset provides an overview of the city. You will see that New Orleans City Center is just 11 miles east of New Orleans International Airport (MSY) which provides convenient access to the city. Trains and buses share Union Station in the CBD.

The STREETWISE® New Orleans street map, as well as other titles for cities and urban areas around the world, exemplify the vision laid out for the STREETWISE® line of maps.
