Long considered to be the liveliest and fun loving cities in Germany Munich has a lot of attractions most of which you will find on the STREETWISE® Munich city map.
A great place to begin a tour of Munich is within the inner circle colored yellow on the STREETWISE® Munich street map. Max Joseph Platz, the central square named after the first king of Bavaria, is a good starting point. Here you will see the National Theatre built in the classicist style. North of the square, is the Residence Museum which is one of the largest museums for interior art in the world. All different art periods can be admired in a Morning or Afternoon tour. Part of the residence complex contains the Staatliche Sammlung für Ägyptische Kunst, the Bavarian State Collection for Ancient Egypt Art.
Walking south from Max Joseph Platz you’ll entire Marienhof where you’ll find the New City Hall and Old city hall buildings.
To the west of the ring road lies the district of Schwabing, the university area and where the big names of art institutions reside. The Alte Pinakothek exhibits a collection of old masters and is considered to be one of the world’s great picture galleries. Across the street is the Neue Pinakothek or new picture gallery offers an overview of European art from classicism to art Nouveau. Across the square is the Pinakothek der Moderne which is the modern art museum of Munich. Next to the modern art museum is The Brandhorst Museum which displays about 200 modern art exhibits from the heirs of Henkel trust and Anette Brandhorst.

Down on Arcisstrasse is the Graphische Sammlung which is the graphic arts museum of Munich.
Along Prinzregentenstrasse at the southern end of the English Garden there are several museums. The Haus der Kunst was the Third Reich’s first monumental structure of Nazi architecture and as Nazi propaganda. It opened in 1937 as a showcase for Nazi art which was intended outshine and condemn modern art on display in the concurrent exhibition.
Further east is the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum considered on of the most important cultural history museums in Europe. The art historical collection displays artworks of late antiquity, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococco, and art Nouveau.
The “English Garden” is Munich’s largest urban public park and offers a lot of attractions. A stroll through the 900 acre quite park with shaded paths is a delight. Foot paths will lead you to a Japanese tea garden and to four of its beer gardens.
To the south of the ring road is the Deutsches Museum on Museum island. There is an immense collection of aircraft, locomotives, machinery, etc. making it an immense assemblage of science and technology.
Munich’s train station, Haupt Bahnhof, is well connected to public transport. More than 25 U and S-Bahn underground metro lines criss cross Munich for convenient journeys to many sites in Munich, Germany. When you hear the word “Oktoberfest” you know what jumps to mind is Bavarian Beer Festival. This world renown annual Bavarian tradition takes place during the month of October and is held in the Theresienwiese, a park located west of Munich center city at map grid H5. Beer tents are put up by large breweries which invites the public to drink beer by the litre. So put on your lederhosen, drink beer, listen to music and dance the hours away. You can use the Munich Metro inset map to travel to Allianz Arena via metro line 6 exiting at Fröttmaning station where the futuristic looking football stadium is the home of Munich’s 2 Bundesliga clubs.
Olympia Park is only a few metro stations away from Munich city center on the U3 line exiting at Olmpiazentrum. Olympic Park was constructed for the 1972 summer Olympics. It is currently home to the highest number of staged national and international competitions in Germany. Near the metro station is the BMW tower and Museum at STREETWISE® Munich map grid reference J7. Note the museum is closed on Mondays. The exhibits at the BMW Museum are top rate, interesting, technologically engaging and beautifully laid out. This is also the home of BMW Art cars. Unbelievable that a French auctioneer and race car driver corralled important artists in the early 1970’s to paint race cars competing at 24 hour Leman circuit. Calder, Stella, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rauschenberg, Holzer, to name a few all contributed designs for BMW cars.
