Milan Street Map

Milan is a relatively small city with the Piazza Duomo as its historic and geographical center. Milan city center has several districts which a visitor can explore on foot or by metro. The STREETWISE® Milan street map includes an inset map drawn at a scale of 1:9,500. The large scale enables greater detail of information to be conveyed with larger type size for easier reading.  Milan City Center is bounded by the inner ring, corresponding to the old  walls which protected Milan during the Middle Ages.  A walk through Milan’s historical center will take you past some of the most famous architectural structures found in Europe.

The trendy district of Brera  with small streets and nightlife  is located around the Accademia di Belle Arti, rendered in dimensional detail, located north of the Duomo. The Fine Arts Academy was a little bohemia, attracting avant-garde painters and writers.

The Sforza Castle is a fortified palace built by the Viscontis and Sforzas who ruled Northern Italy during the Middle Ages. The Castle was renovated to house museums and libraries. Particularly noteworthy is the Pinacoteca Art Gallery containing old master paintings, and the Museo d’Arte Antica with sculptures from the Middle Ages. On the STREETWISE® Milan city map the castle like other prominent sites is drawn in architectural detail so identifying its location is rather easy. The castle as well as the Palazzo dell’Arte are located in the Parco Sempione.  The Triennale of Milan, based in the Palazzo dell’Arte, has been a design mecca for Italians since 1923. It provides a year round exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts.

The core of Milan is the cathedral square or Piazza Duomo, with its spectacular cathedral or Duomo. Thousands of people stroll through the piazza everyday. On the south side  of the Duomo you’ll find tourist information office, and on the north side of the Duomo is another important architectural arcade called the Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele II. The Gallerie is one of the most beautiful covered galleries in Europe. It was the first of its kind to make use of iron and glass in a structure of this size. On the STREETWISE® Milan street map you’ll see that a short distance north of the Galleria is the famous opera house Teatro alla Scala. Acroos the Piaza delle Scala is the Palazzo Marino, the Milan City Council Chamber’s.

If nothing else Milan is known for style and in the “Quadrilatero della moda” with its original Armani, Dolce & Gabana, Ferré, Valentino, Versace and Zegna stores. Both the street and district, Montenapoleone, take their name from a state pawn shop (Monte”) opened in this district during Napoleone’s rule. Via Monte Napoleone with its narrow offshoot side streets is one of the most elegant streets in Milan.

South of Milan’s city center is The Sant’Ambrogio district, once the town’s port. Like any other port city, Milan’s port was a lively place and an occasional seedier undertone. A very exceptional church in the district is San Lorenzo with its original Roman columns still standing in front. Walking south you reach the Darsena (Basin) and the Navigli. These are still filled with water where people hang out in cafes after dark. The hipper section is highlighted on the STREETWISE® Milan street map at grid G10 and 11.

West of Milan’s city center is Corso Magenta a 19th century district  with many good shops lining the street. On the Corso Magenta is the Renaissance church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, map grid reference B10. It was the convent here that between 1495 and 1497, Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper his most famous and largest work. Advance tickets are required to visit da Vinci’s masterpiece.  Metro line 1 will take you near to S. Maria delle Grazie exiting at station “Conciliazione”.

The overall redevelopment of the area occupied by Milan Fair is taking shape on a reclaimed area in Rho-Pero on the Milan-Malpensa autoroute.  This site has always exhibited the best of Milan and Italian goods. The Milan fairground complex can be found on the STREETWISE® Milan street map area map on the reverse side at grid coordinate K1. Milan metro line 1 runs from central Milan to the fairground.
