Tuscany, the most popular regional destination in Italy, evokes images of sun, picturesque landscapes, and food glorious food. Here you’ll find the great Renaissance city of Florence, the countryside dotted with perfectly preserved hill towns unchanged for hundreds of years, small wineries, and family owned trattorias. If you go to Italy, don’t limit your roaming to just Tuscany; ramble thru Umbria too as sites and pleasures overlap between the neighboring regions. You’ll understand how for centuries this rolling countryside has inspired romantic poets and writers to expound on the natural beauty you see everywhere. Experience it for yourself and you might be inspired to write a verse or two of your own.
STREETWISE® MAP PACK TUSCANY makes this incredible region completely accessible. It contains three maps: the Florence map enables you to discover all the historic and art treasures of this great city. After the heady cultural exposure of Florence, continue your Tuscan adventure with the map of Tuscany, and head south towards Siena. Pass thru Greve in Chianti, up the hill to San Gimignano where the culture of keeping up with the Joneses led leading families to build the numerous towers in town, down the hill and back up again to go thru Poggibonsi, past the hill where you’ll find Castellina in Chianti and then up, up, up the hill to Radda in Chianti (do you see the theme here). Back down the hill past the Chianti Classico Consortium (perhaps taking a moment to sip a sample) then on to Siena, the home of the Palio, perhaps the most exciting horse race run by riders in tights that you’ll ever find.
Out of Siena amble further south to Pienza, pause in Montepulciano for a sampling of Vino Nobile, up to Cortona, recently famous for Frances Mayes' book “Under a Tuscan Sun,” then scoot around Lago Trasimeno (a bit marshy for swimming, but a lovely aquatic respite from the up and down of the Tuscan hills). Switch to your map of Umbria and land in Perugia to stroll through the well preserved historical center of this Etruscan stronghold. After Perugia, venture east to Assisi and visit the restored Basilica of St Francis. Say a little prayer that you don’t have to endure what the poor monk had to endure (starvation, abject poverty, no shoes in winter) and be grateful that the 1995 earthquake didn’t do more damage to the astounding frescoes.
Wander down to Deruta, a well known center for pottery for the past thousand years (yes, thousand), swing by Orvieto, a stunning town clutching onto the top of a steep hill. Sample the delicious white wine produced in the area then off again, this time to Todi, another historic Etruscan center with views that stretch down the Tiber Valley. From Todi, head to Spoleto, home to the Festival of Two Worlds. For the first two weeks in July the town is engorged with performers and visitors from around the world to see this extravaganza of theatre, music, dance and art. The rest of the year it reverts back to its true self – a quiet, charming place celebrating the beauty of everyday life.
From Spoleto, so many choices; east to Norcia for a truffle tasting, north to Gubbio for the Ceri Race Festival, a race of gigantic candles thru the town, held every May 15 since the 12th century (see what it's all about by clicking here or here); or further on to San Marino, the world’s oldest republic and a completely autonomous country approximately one third the size of Washington DC landlocked within Italy.
Where ever you choose to roam, Florence, the epicenter of the greatest art explosion in history, Umbria, il cuor verde d'Italia (the green heart of Italy) resounding with its Etruscan and Medieval history or the golden washed landscape of Tuscany crisscrossed with rows of cypress trees and punctuated with simple villas, you will be better served with the STREETWISE® MAP PACK Tuscany as your guide and traveling companion.
