Madrid can be divided into two main districts which is of real interest for travelers. Madrid’s central old town, with medieval architecture with lavish Hapsburg and Bourbon Palaces is situated around historic Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Palacio Real. It the best place to explore on foot.  A little further east of old town is the broad boulevard of Paseo del Prado where the spectacular Prado Museum resides. There are abundant metro lines converging in Madrid’s old town area so traveling in and out of this section of town is convenient. The Ensanche ( extension) refers to all parts of Madrid built outside of the old city walls from the 18th century onwards. This area has the wide cosmopolitan Castellana Avenue fitted out with its business offices, classy hotels and government offices. The traditionally organized street grids of the newer areas also include Salamanca home of Madrid’s best shops and restaurants. The Guindalera neighborhood is where Las Ventas is located, which has long been considered the home of Spanish bullfighting since it opened in 1931.  Hop on the Madrid metro to Ventas metro station to view Madrid’s historic Plaza de Toros bullfighting ring and museum. Another one of Madrid’s passions is football or soccer. Just north of the main map grid but on the Madrid area map is the Real Madrid Football stadium which is just across from metro station Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid commands a considerable international following and taking in a game at the stadium is not to be missed.
