Queens is the largest of the five boroughs of Manhattan in terms of land mass and is one of the largest cities in America. A wonderful assemblage of international cultures mix and flow here resulting in not only a population diversity worthy of the United Nations, but a dining diversity that means you could have a delicious ethnic dinner every night for weeks without repeating cuisines. Indian, Greek, Southeast Asian, Russian, Italian, Korean, Czech, Jamaican and German are only some of the nationalities represented in just over 100 square miles.
There’s plenty to do in Queens for all tastes. Art aficionados will appreciate the cutting edge performances, installations and exhibits at PS 1, an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. Isamu Noguchi envisioned creating a museum and sculpture garden out of former factory buildings. Recently renovated, it is an oasis of modern simplicity. The Museum of the Moving Image has exhibitions as well as screenings from their expansive collection, the largest in the country. If it’s about film or TV, you’ll find it here.
The 1964 World's Fair has left behind mementos that may seem more George Jetson than Beaver Cleaver. The Unisphere and three New York State Pavilion observation towers, still standing on the old fairgrounds that have now become Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, are now used as locations for TV and movies (Men in Black for one) and as visible landmarks along the Long Island Expressway. Considered the Central Park of Queens, the 1,255 acres have plenty of activities to keep you entertained: the Queens Museum of Art, a large fresh water lake, par-3 golf course, petting zoo, softball diamonds, barbeque pits, the Hall of Science and miles of paths to stroll are just some of the highlights.
Music has always played a big part here. Among the jazz greats who have called Queens home are Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Bassie. More current musicians include the rapper 50 Cent, Run DMZ and the Ramones.
And then there are the Mets. It’s difficult to say anything, beyond the fact that the Mets have celebrated their 40th anniversary at Shea Stadium, without entering into a passionate debate about who is the better half of the famed subway series. Let’s leave it by saying that New York is lucky to have two teams that are worthy of such loyalty.
