Naples and the Amalfi Coast are a lot like its most famous daughter, Sophia Loren: lively, sensuous, charming, and stunningly beautiful with a natural form that could only be created by God. Ms. Loren has said that everything she is she owes to pasta, but you can’t help wondering as you pass clusters of beautiful women if it isn’t something in the water as well. Whatever it is, spend enough time here and it’s bound to rub off on you.

Perhaps it’s the passion that seems to flow through everything you see and do in this gorgeous setting on the bay. At a restaurant, order a plate of spaghetti vongole with tender little clams from the bay and the waiter congratulates you as if you’ve just won the lottery (you may as well have – it’s delicious!). Explore the tiny streets of the Spaccanaploi and hear a cacophony of exuberant “conversations” complete with enough hand gestures to qualify as aerobic activity. Wander thru the ruins of Pompeii and see the public declaration of sensual delights in the form of provocative mosaics and statuary. Cool, calm and collected is not Naples – fiery, flamboyant and alive is more like it.
