STREETWISE® Buenos Aires Map 2010

Just as there are morning people and night people, so it is with cities and Buenos Aires is a night city.  While early morning risers may enjoy the quiet before the chaos and have the streets pretty much to themselves, they may also miss a slice of what makes Buenos Aires distinctive.
The great parillas hit their stride after 9 PM when most tourists have departed and the regulars arrive.

Milongas, where the locals go to tango, don’t start until 10PM and then may last well into the night.  It’s not uncommon to end your night of dancing as the street sweepers start their early morning run.  Call a porteña first thing in the morning and you may hear a very sleepy voice and get the distinct impression that coffee has not yet been consumed.  Buenos Aires rises slowly and stays out late.

It’s this lack of early morning urgency that makes BA such a relaxing place to spend time.  There’s nothing that has to be done today and perhaps not even tomorrow.  Being in Buenos Aires is about a feeling and a way of life rather than a set itinerary.

Yes, there are sites you shouldn’t miss: MALBA – the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo -where the mothers of the missing still march on Thursday, Cementerio de la Recoleta - the most expensive real estate in BA, Palacio Barolo – an architectural tribute to Dante, the Evita Museum – the woman behind the wardrobe or La Caminito (although, frankly, you could miss this over blown tourist trap).

But savoring the city is more about spending time in the neighborhoods and being part of the landscape  (maybe that’s the reason that renting an apartment is such a popular choice, even if it’s just a week).  From the hip and chic in Palermo (Chico, Soho and Hollywood) through the buzz of business in the Microcenter to the upscale elegance of Recoleta,  the neighborhoods of BA offer something for everyone and are all worthy of languid exploration.

Spend time in a café reading the newspaper.  Café La Biela outside the cemetery in Recoleta is a window on the dignified residents who live nearby.  The café at Plaza Dorrego is also a front seat, but on a entirely different area.  Older and a bit more worn around the edges, San Telmo is authentically bohemian even though a few small hotels have emerged along with more upscale shopping.

Stroll along the ecological preserve at Puerto Madero and watch the throngs of professional dog walkers herd their charges.  By a choripan from the vendors along the promenade and douse it with chimichurri.

Have ice cream delivered via Vespa. That’s right, you can get the most lip-smackingly luscious ice cream you have ever tasted delivered to you by Vespa from a number of ice cream chains across the city.  This is living.

Sit in the Plaza Cortázar in Palermo Soho and watch as boutique hotels sprout up as fast as the lumber arrives.  It may seem like a new one opens every week.  Some are okay, some are great and some are grand, but they are all individual and a real alternative to chain hotels.

Take a tango lesson in Abasto.  Take more than one tango lesson. Then read up on tango etiquette and have a go at a milonga (remember disco naps? they come in handy here).   In fact if you really want a full tango immersion, book a stay at a tango hotel (Hotel Dandi Mansion is one) during the Buenos Aires Tango Festival.  Couples from all over come to compete and the dancing is spectacular.  The finals are held at Luna Park.  Each pair has their coterie of fans who cheer on their favorites as passionately as soccer fans.  The old Harrods location is headquarters for the Festival.  Come to watch a mid afternoon milonga, sign up for group lessons or shop among the booths selling tango shoes, clothing and jewelry.  All tango, all the time.

How are you going to find all these treasures?  With the STREETWISE map of Buenos Aires.  This detailed city map of BA shows the expanse of the city from La Caminita to north of Belgrano, with everything you want to see in between.  There are three inset maps: Retiro/Recoleta shows you how to get from the Plaza San Martin to the Cementerio, via Avenida Alvear the elegant shopping thoroughfare; the Microcenter & San Telmo inset city map takes you from the Casa Rosada at the Plaza Mayo to the center of San Telmo; the inset map of Palermo Viejo breaks up the area into Palermo, Palermo Soho, Palermo Hollywood and Las Canitas.  The Buenos Aires map by STREETWISE is fully indexed and includes hotels, sites, parks, hospitals, government and education locations as well as an index of the metro stations.  The metro lines and stops are all clearly marked on the map.  This is the only street map of Buenos Aires that you’ll need.
