Berlin, capital of cool, has undergone a cultural renaissance since dismantling the Berlin wall and the German government move from Bonn to Berlin. Berlin has been reborn as one of the must visit cities in Europe. American and European creative elite have invaded Berlin as it becomes the international center of art and creativity. Cutting edge architecture, contemporary art, nightclubs, cheap rents and laissez faire atmosphere give Berlin a vitality not found in other European cities.
There are many things to do in Berlin and with a good Berlin street map like STREETWISE®, the sights will become more accessible. Perhaps the best place to begin is at Brandenburger Tor one of the main symbols of Berlin. Walking east along Unter den Linden you’ll soon enter the heart of Cultural Berlin. A quick detour south on Friedrichstrass will lead to the Check Point Charlie Museum near Zimmerstrass. Otherwise, continue on past the Opera house, German Museum Deutsches Historisches) and Museum Island where the big names in art institutions reside. The five museums that comprise Berlin’s famous Museum Island are: The Bode Museum, the old museum (Altes Museum), the Neues Museum with its’ famous artifact of the bust of Queen Nefertit and the monumental Pergamon Museum with its’ enormous Pergamon Alter and the Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie). Continue east on Karl Liebknechtstr past another Berlin Landmark the Fernsehturm television tower. Here is to Alexanderplatz which 20 years ago was East Berlins principle square with its bronze statues of communist leaders. Alexanderplatz is a major metro hub where you can catch the u bahn west to the Kulture Forum, near Potsdamer Platz, where the Gemäaldegalerie is located with its collection of European masterpieces from the 13th to 18th centuries. Nearby is a very different museum one which more typifies what’s happening in Berlin is the Neue Nationalgalerie. This is the modern art museum of Berlin with a focus on 2oth century art. The museum building and its sculpture garden were designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and opened in 1968.
One of the great features of the STREETWISE® Berlin street map is the detailed metro map overlaid on the street grid. This enables you to pinpoint which underground Berlin metro station is nearest to where you want to go. For example from the Kultur Forum if you wanted to travel to the Kurfürstendamm or “Ku’damm”, the most famous shopping avenue in Berlin, you would see the closest U bahn station would be the U2 line. The STREETWISE® Berlin city map also has a separate Berlin metro map which covers all of the city including S bahn and U bahn lines with tariff zones.
No visitor to Berlin should miss seeing Charlottenburg Palace and park. The Schloss Charlottenburg is an early 18th century baroque palace in Berlin’s western Charlottenburg district. Across the street, Spandauerdamm is the Sammlung Berggruen on of the world’s major private art collections and includes works by Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Klee, and Giacometti. Many other sights and hotels are featured on the Streetwise Berlin map. Many other sights and Berlin hotels are featured on the STREETWISE® Berlin map.
