A couple of things not to forget when traveling to Athens; sun screen, a good pair of sunglasses and a Streetwise Athens street map.  Greece is hot in summer and the sun shines 300 days a year and the light can be blinding at times especially walking among the ruins of the Acropolis.

Bring a good up to date detailed street map of Athens. Many changes have taken place in Athens spurred on by the 2004 Olympics . The Athens metro has been expanded so you can now travel by metro line 3 from Eleftherios Venizelos airport into the center of Athens exiting at Plateia Syntagmatos where you can catch a cab to your hotel, many of which are listed on the Streetwise Athens street map. The same metro line 3 extends to the cool neighborhood of Gazi, full of restaurants, cafes, music and art eclilsing Psiri as the best place to be at night. Or from the Plateia Syntagmatos you can take line 2 one stop down to visit the new Acropolis Museum. A short walk  across the pedestrian street, Dionysiou Aeropagitou, you can  walk up and around the Acropolis to visit the Parthenon and ancient Agora. For a late lunch or early dinner head down to the base of the Acropolis and find an eatery in the charming Plaka neighborhood. You’ll probably want to return to the Plaka and Monastiraki neighborhoods to enjoy more sites like the Roman Agora and if you can make it on Sunday, do so. Sunday is special in Athens. That’s when people from all over come to buy and sell in the famous Monastiraki Flea Market. In fact Sunday is the only day when it’s a real Flea market and not just a collection of small shops.

In addition to the the Acropolis Museum, there is the must see National Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum, one of Europe’s best small museums of Greece culture and history and the Goulandris Foundation Museum of Cycladic Art.

Traveling to a Greek Island on your own is not complicated.
